*Title opens. There's a bwaum sound effect (please click below if you don't know what I'm talking about) and text appears on a black background and fades with the sound. Become familiar with this sound. It's used a lot. This is how you make mundane horse posts fun.*

*BWAUM SOUND EFFECT*

*Dramatic pause / fade to black*

Narrator: It was the coldest winter of the year since last year...

Theresa peers outside and up at the foreboding dark clouds and turns to Theresa's mother, "I don't think she'll foal with the weather like this."

Theresa's mother is replaced with a guy who could play AHAB in Moby Dick. The scene is mono-chromic blue except the light of the cigar. He has an eyepatch, stubble, hook for a hand, a cigar and a raspy voice to boot, "Aye, but she'll foal."

*close up on the old sailor exhaling smoke*
Theresa's mother / AHAB: “…. Sooner than you think.”

*BWAUM SOUND EFFECT*

Theresa, replaced now with Jennifer Lawrence turns around quickly as screeching violins accompany the tight zoom to her face, “Oh Shi….”

A jump cut of T’s sister played by Jessica Alba screaming into a headset/Bluetooth, “WAS IT LIQUID OR SOLID? LIQUID OR SOLID?”

Theresa is seen screaming back watching Don’t from a monitor, “I DON’T KNOW!”

T’s sis, “THINK! WAS IT LIQUID OR SOLID?”

T, nearly in tears shakily screams into the phone, “IT LOOKED LIQUID!”

*BWAUM SOUND EFFECT*

Masses rush through the streets to get to monitors to watch.

Politicians start arguing against each other and slamming things on desks.

A cop ducks into his car to consult his CB.

A small child covers their mouth, wide-eyed in anticipation.

*BWAUM TO BLACK*

*Voice over, though the voice is shaky and distant*
T: I think it was liquid!

*More jump cuts resume now as well as the action, T, jumping over the gate with a bale of hay over her shoulder, replacing the completely average amount of hay Don’t has eaten.*

Narrator: One horse

*Jump cut of T’s mom / sailor looking at the baby monitor pointing with his hook as the horse eats some oats, doing nothing really noteworthy.*

Narrator: One foal

*Jump cut of T’s friends comforting each other in tears, the obvious lack of sleep evident on their faces, family members watching from an illuminated doorway with confused concern.*

Narrator: One due date

*Jump cut to T and T’s sister shoveling out the stall in a totally dramatic and action worthy way as the horse THEN decides to pee, absolutely normally.*

Narrator: But no one knows

*Jump cut to a guy that’s asleep on the couch with a crocheted afghan over him, that suddenly wakes when he hears a nicker. He rushes and puts on his glasses to stare at an endless stream of facebook updates.*

Narrator: …. When

*Jump cut to T falling to her knees as the horse simply chews two treats while watching T. The horse is obviously a bit bewildered*

T: DOOOOOOOON’T!

*Music crescendos*

DON’T DON’T DO IT

*BWAUM AGAIN*

Due Date: Apparently not tonight.

Foal watch night 7: Day 347

We've been running on so little sleep, so last night I napped while on duty. We've decided that if Don't isn't doing anything, it's safe to nap for 30 minutes. (On the couch with the monitor in sight, of course). By the time I fall asleep, that's 15 minutes, but it's still been really helping. I checked on her and napped from 12-1 this morning and then Mom was home and took over. She let me sleep until 6, which was amazing! Now I feel bad for her, though. She's back in bed now, but I know she won't stay there for nearly long enough.

I've been more concerned about HER getting some sleep, and she's more worried about ME sleeping.

The kids stayed here last night, so I got them ready for school while checking on the monitor periodically. Don't isn't doing much this morning. She's moving more than I'm used to seeing, but during the day we don't watch as closely, since we're usually in and out of the barn and stuff. The puppies will wake up soon, and I'll head out there. More updates later! Hopefully the really interesting kind! Here's to hoping for a sleepless night ending in a baby! 🐴 ☕️

10:20
Today was uneventful, as far as labor goes, but we expected that during the day. We spent most of the day outside/in the barn, so she didn't really get any peace and quiet. Gus (Mom's gelded Tennessee Walker) and Jack [my (even though Mom takes care of him) cute little hairy ass] are spending the night outside, so Don't has the barn to herself.

She got to go outside and enjoy the sunshine for a while, and I took her on a walk around the pasture a couple laps. She enjoyed that! Then she trotted her fat butt back to the barn. It looked less than graceful, and I was a little afraid she might fall down, but she was fine.

I brushed her a little and gave her treats and all but begged for a baby tonight. So far she's not showing any signs, but it's still early!

Isn't she pretty?

Here's one lopsided baby bump!
And her udder picture

Edited to add: I'm so convinced, despite zero signs, that she's going to foal tonight that anytime she moves, I get excited. "Oh! She stomped her foot!"

Foal watch night 6 Day 344

I probably should have updated this daily because I can no longer separate which day is which in my mind. The most important thing is, Don't didn't do anything today. Now let's see if I can figure out which pictures belong to day 344!

Foal watch night 5

Today I went home and took a hot bath and a 2 hour nap in my very comfy bed. Oh how I miss my bed. I love it. It's a king sized bed and it has a heated mattress pad. And pillows. Oh, right. Don't.

Mom and I checked on her and said jello in the morning when Mom took care of the dogs again. In her stall was none other than very soft poop. We were NOT imagining it. Two squishy piles. The rest of what we saw was solid. Her stall was soaked with urine. She peed a TON last night.

Mom an Ashley took care of her and let her enjoy the nicer weather for quite a while. We repositioned the camera so hopefully there's no more horse hidey hole where she can vanish from the camera view.

8:20 pm laying sternal. Probably resting up for the big night (in a month).

Geez she's huge. I always wanted a hippo! A few glares at her belly, but sofar she seems to be resting peacefully.

She rested for about 5 minutes, started biting her belly, rolled, back sternal, bites, roll, back sternal then to her feet. A she got to her feet she spun around quickly and startled. The wind started really picking up and she started moving quickly back and forth in her stall. Maybe wind is scary?

12am Mom and I headed to the barn to take care of puppies. Mom cleaned Dont's stall and I cuddled Don't and took pictures of her udder. We purposely disturbed her so that hopefully she'd think twice about labor tonight. It's just too cold. Other than a few random signs (still holding tail up, for example), she seems to be behaving.

2:30-5:30 Mom's turn to watch. I took a nap. The report when I woke up was that it's really cold, and Don't is behaving. Mostly resting with a few signs like the tail and rubbing her teeth. Just keeping us on our toes!

7am Don't didn't touch her hay, but she's acting normally. She ate grain for me with little hesitation.

1pm Don't ate about half of her hay. That's half as much as normal, but better than none. Mom went to work, so I'm on my own for the most part. Brittany might stop by later so that I can nap, which is awesome of her.

Don't still doesn't have a full udder. That didn't necessarily matter, but tonight I'm taking it as a sign she won't have the baby. It's far too cold, and it takes mom 30 minutes to get home.
The small side of her udder has caught up with the big side and she's even now, but she still has a crease in the middle. Her teats are filling, too. No wax or milk that we could see.

Udder day 345:

And a belly picture! Sorry for the glare but couldn't be helped.

Foal watch day 4

Day 343

9pm or so she has started blowing a lot. She was rubbing her butt on the wall and later stood with her butt firmly pressed against the wall for quite a while. She laid down, sternal for a while, appearing uncomfortable, but not miserable. She did a big roll and jumped up. Tail went up, we thought it was time to poo, but she didn't. She's holding her tail very high often and swishing it a lot. Almost wagging it like a dog.

10:40
She's also started rubbing her teeth on the wall. She's pacing a considerable amount and is standing in the weirdest positions. Back feet really close, one back leg up and the other bent far, like a one legged squat... Things like that. Mom has declared this is the night and I refuse to agree because I'm tired of this horse proving us wrong.

11:44 I can't survive many more days of this. She's acting the same. She hasn't laid down again. She's currently resting in her naughty corner. She hasn't visited it for a while. This is the first time she's stood still for a while. Probably stopped labor. I'll update again in a month when she foals. I won't be able to form words by then, much less type, so good luck interpreting her foaling story.

11-12 I'm actually typing this on Sunday evening. Things got crazy and I only updated Facebook and not here. Around this time, Don't started getting really crazy. All the aforementioned signs were multiplied by 1572 and she finally convinced me tonight was the night. Mom, Ashley, and I were glued to the monitor watching.

12ish with her tail held high, (she'd been holding it up a ton anyway, she shoved her butt near a wall so we couldn't see well. (She was standing). Don't get super excited, yet. No baby, but she pooped. The thing is, it appeared to be liquid poop. Maybe this means nothing to you, but in my vast experience of watching YouTube and mare stare for 3 weeks, I knew this was often a sign that water breaking was imminent. I'd already shared this delightful knowledge with anyone who would listen, so naturally we all freaked out the tiniest bit. Coats and shoes were thrown on and we headed for the door. Time to go to the barn.

We stopped. Took a breath and thought about it. We didn't want to interrupt too early. We all decided to wait. We called my sister and told her it was time for her to come home (she was about 15 minutes away). We continued watching and Don't got increasingly restless. Then, out of nowhere (and completely unlike him to do randomly in the middle of the night) the donkey brayed. Don't wasn't affected a whole lot, but she definitely took a step backwards as far as labor goes. This happened again about an hour later. She slowed down again.

Then, the dogs in the other side of the barn started barking to go outside. It was all downhill from there. She slowly became less interesting to watch and eventually was content napping.

No baby.

Foal watch night 3

9:30pm: Don't isn't doing a whole lot. It's warmer and quiet, and everyone says she'll foal tonight, but I'm not convinced.

She's done quite a bit of pacing, but not an insane amount like last night. She's practically wagging her tail like a dog, and she seems to hold her tail high and to the side (like she's getting ready to poop) almost constantly. It's kind of odd to watch.

She laid down once about a half hour ago, right in a corner. (Feet away from the wall, so no casting!) She rested for about 10 minutes, waking to glare at her belly a few times. Then she tried to roll, but didn't have room there. She jumped up, lifted her tail, did a couple circles aroun the stall, and is now munching on her hay.

Mom, Jessie, and Brian are all napping. I have the kids here and my cousin Ashley is spending the night, too! Hopefully she'll get to see some foaling action! Fingers crossed.

9:53 she pooped. Oh, and Jessie is awake. That's all I've got for you. (Jessie's mad. "She's not doing a freaking thing!") Also, the baby monitor won't work if the microwave is running. That's almost as frustrating as the fact that Don't isn't doing enough I warrant my panic if the monitor turns off.

10:20 she peed. Interesting, right? She's blowing quite a lot. Probably nothing, but it's new.

10:53 she laid down for ten minutes, did a little roll and back up. She is never having the baby.

11:37 she pooped. No baby, minimal pacing. Resting up to foal in 2015 or so.

11:58 SURPRISE! Don't isn't even pregnant! This was all an elaborate, really lame prank. Hahahahaha you fell for it! But really. I'm beginning to wonder. I think the vet is in on it. "Heartbeat sounds good!" Pffft. She made that up. (I'm getting impatient.)

12:51 I have company again. Mom and Jessie are awake. The kids, Brian, and Ashley are sleeping. Don't is just relaxing. Eating hay, gettin a drink, holding her tail in the air.

2:03 she laid down for approximately forever. Rolled. Got up. Peed, and is now standing with her tail high to the left. Just hanging out with her tail held stupid.

Foaling night #2 day 341

Red vulva, big boobies. Surely tonight is the night. Fatty didn't want exercise and she didn't want her grain.

9pm: Don't has swished her tail, held it up, and pooped 3 tons. Repeat.

10:30pm: She laid down! Oh, wait. She stayed there. And went to sleep. A few dirty looks at her belly.

11:00 she's back up. Some pawing at the ground. Tail way up. Mom just said "she's having the baby tonight." I agree. Seriously. Some pushing.

11:03: cue freak out and squealing. Woke up Jessie and Brian. Mom said wait. I didn't listen.

11:30 Jessie keeps glaring at me. Brian hates me. Don't is happily eating her hay.

11:53: she's occasionally holding her tail up. Little pushes. Jessie wants to go back to bed, but Brian is in it for the long haul. Jessie ate my peanut butter m&ms. I have my boots on. Just in case. I'd be the one running to the barn in my sock feet. I don't have my snowsuit on yet. It's within reach. I have my escape plan mapped out.

4:44 still waiting. She's just messing with us at this point. She's been up and down quite a bit. She's currently down, glaring at her belly.

7 or 8 or something: Don't stopped everything. The sun rose and Don't thought she'd be hilarious and stop. I called her names, but that didn't help.

Foaling night #1

Day 340

Tonight was the night I started living at Mom's house. Being the amazing mother I am, I left the kids sleeping in the house and I went to the barn. It was approximately 72 degrees below zero, and tonight was definitely the night. (I doubted it was, but I wasn't risking it)

During the night, Don't did things like poop, pee, eat, drink, and pace. At 3am I went to bed while mom watched the monitor until about 5. My alarm woke me up at 5:30 and behold! No baby. Just a really fat horse and a lot of poo. Back to sleep until 6:30. No baby. She was laughing at me, so I gave the monitor the finger and went back to bed. Foaling night #1 was a bust.

Day 341

Don't really messed up the straw in her stall last night with all of her pacing etc. She's swishing her tail and holding it up a LOT. Her udder looks about the same as yesterday.

The baby seems to have dropped a lot. She's got the telltale v shape to her belly. She did not want to go outside today, and especially didn't want to go on a short walk with me.

She didn't eat much, if any, hay while outside. She also didn't touch her grain for quite sometime after coming inside. She did eventually take a bite of it, but I've never seen her ignore her grain for even a minute.

The sides of her tail are indented and very spongy to the touch.

The inside of her vulva has gone from light pink to dark red. We forgot to look at the lengthening of her vulva today.

So basically, she could go at ANY TIME!

Day 340

Today Don't was extra thrilled about the prospect of Mom checking her for milk. Everyone survived the little battle, but we still didn't get any milk out of her. This is surprising because her udder is really filling up! Let's compare!
Two days ago:
Today:

The part to your right in the bottom picture is right and hard. As if that wasn't enough excitement for us, Dont also had some bloody discharge. This is most likely part of her mucus plug. (They is plug is stuck on the cervix, and as te cervix starts to dialate, the mucus plug dislodges and comes out.

Now for belly pictures! She's ginormous! We're looking for her belly to be less round and kind of a curved "v" pointing at the ground.

Her vulva also looks a lot more loose/relaxed, so we are getting closer!

Gross picture warning! Stop here if you get grossed out easily!

Vulva before

Vulva now (note bloody discharge towards bottom.)

Day 338

Today Mom sent me pictures and I got insanely excited because it appeared that Don't finally has more of an udder. I wasn't happy with the vulva shot because it was at an angle (Mom was in a hurry. Unlike me, she has this thing she calls a job!) and it looked really loose to me.

Naturally, I squealed a little and called mom and told her I HAD to go see for myself. Being the overprotective (and smart) mom she is, she said I couldn't go in th stall by myself. Since I highly doubt that Don't would nicel position her tail by the stall wall for me to get a picture from outsid the stall, or roll on her belly for an udder picture, I went with plan B: bug mom's friend.

Brittney was not only nice enough to let us borrow her video baby monitor for easier viewing when don't goes into labor, but she also brought baby Gage to the farm and held Dont's head so I could get pictures and see for myself.

The verdict: one side of her udder looks pretty full. I didn't touch it since mom would kill me if I got kicked, but it appeared to have changed quite a bit. I could even see it from the side, which is new! Brit and I agreed that we vulva looks longer and looser, too.

So her udder still isn't full, but it's really filling up! Don't was also holding her tail higher than normal an swishing it quite a bit. Kind of like she was swatting at non-existent flies. These are all signs that she's getting close. Not hours away close, but close enough that my completely non-professional, biased and over-excited opinion is that we will have a baby within a week. Unless her udder deflates and she goes into a holding pattern, in which case you'll be able to fin me in the corner of the barn. Sobbing.

Pictures are in the comparison posts for anyone who wants to see them. Keeping this PG rated for my more squeamish readers who don't enjoy an occasional horse vulva picture.

Picture of her back end. Supposed to look for something like indentions near tail. I don't see any. I also don't really know exactly what I'm looking for.

Day 333

Don't was really sweet today. I think she pretended she might kick Mom once and she half-heartedly threatened me once, but she wasn't serious, and we kind of deserved it. Mom was washing her udder. It still feels like it's filling up, but it's still kind of non-existent. (I was feeling the baby and not petting her with my other hand- how dare me!-when she raised her leg at me. Do not get the wrong impression and think she's mean. She's really sweet and she's never gotten really serious about kicking us. Her back right leg was hurt at some point before we got her and she's really touchy on that side. Plus she's been pregnant for almost a YEAR so she's understandably grumpy.

More importantly.... We not only WATCHED the baby move today, but we both got to feel it! I thought I felt it once before, but it was a weird rolling, and not a kick like I expected. Today we watched the baby rolling around and then I had y hand on her belly and I clearly SAW a huge kick in front of my hand. Mom came over and there was another smaller kick, but Mom missed it. Then mom was feeling where I saw the kicks and once more... KICK! A huge baby kick right under her hand. I could see it as plain as day, and Mom got to feel it. That was pretty exciting!

Don't seemed a little bigger today, but her belly is still round, meaning baby hasn't dropped yet. Her vulva wasn't at all relaxed, so.... No baby, yet! (Knock on wood and all that!)

Baby belly day 333

I'll just put the udder/vulva pictures in the other posts to keep this ONE post kid-friendly.

Day 332

No change today. Mom said Don't was still being nice. She ate her grain and her hay. She didn't drink last night, which is a bit weird. Her udder and vulva look the same as yesterday, so just a baby belly picture for the day!

Day 340

Day 331

Today Mom described Don't as "cuddly." She's still eating fine, and is still very protective over her hay/grain if she thinks Gus might want to steal it. Let's start with some belly pictures!

Not much change there. She doesn't have that "belly pointing to the ground" look that we're watching out for, yet.

Back end view

I think her udders may have looked a little more full yesterday than today, but I don't  know what mom thinks. (And I'm just going by the pictures since I haven't seen her in two days) Mom said her udders definitely have started feeling more "solid" since the first time we checked. She still can't express any milk.
And, of course, the long-awaited mare vulva pictures. Again, I think it almost seemed more "relaxed" yesterday, and Mom said the same thing.

So no one will be camping out in the barn tonight, and I doubt Mom will come home to a baby tonight!

And Vulva Comparisons

For anyone wondering why in the world I'm posting pictures of her vulva, we are watching for it to "relax." The more loose and relaxed it looks, the closer she is to foaling.
